Traditional RPGs with Fantastic Animals

SRR Game Designs

About the same time that SRR was beginning formal graduate training in animal behavior, he also was introduced to some of the first role-playing games, such as Dungeons & Dragons & Empire of the Petal Throne. Within a year, he collaborated with a fellow ethologist, Dennis Sustare, to produce their own RPG with an animal theme.

Bunnies and Burrows, 1st Edition

B. Dennis Sustare & Scott Robinson

Inspired by the novel Watership Down by Richard Adams, Bunnies & Burrows (B&B) is a role-playing game (RPG) about rabbits contending with enemies and hazards in a world of nature. Published by Fantasy Games Unlimited in 1976, the game featured intelligent animals as characters in lieu of the humans and allied races of conventional RPGs. B&B introduced several innovations to role-playing game design, being the first game to allow players to have non-humanoid roles, the first to allow players to advance in different skill categories, and the first to provide detailed combat skills. Fantasy Games Unlimited published a second edition of the game in 1982, and the game was modified and republished by Steve Jackson Games as an official GURPS supplement in 1992.

Bunnies and Burrows, 3rd Edition

Dr. B. Dennis Sustare & Dr. Scott R. Robinson

Although long out of print, the original B&B remained popular among a core community of players since its appearance in 1976. In 2019, SRR and his original co-author, Dennis Sustare, partnered with Frog God Games to return this venerable and influential piece of tabletop role-playing games to print. This new edition was re-conceptualized from top to bottom, featuring brand new, full color art by artists Darlene, Moa Wallin, Maggie Vandewalle, Faith Burgar, Terry Pavlet, and others. It also includes a large full-color map, printable character cards, tactical maps and animal tokens for playing out pursuit and combat on a game board, and various types of encounters and guidelines for gamemasters.

The Fairy Ring of the Nibble Onions

A tongue-in-cheek take on Der Ring des Nibelungen, this expansion is an "adventure" with a complete storyline written for the Bunnies & Burrows game system. Nibble Onions introduces an Act and Scene format to facilitate ease of use by novice and experienced gamers alike, while advancing the story with little need for preparation by the GM or players. The scenario includes a map of the Valley of Coneylaeth,

Other Modules for the Bunnies & Burrows Game System

Three additional Adventures are available for players interested in balanced scenarios ready-to-play. The Garden Raid is an introductory adventure that can serve as a tutorial for basic game mechanics and offers common challenges that new players may face in the game. It takes place in late winter, when the snow and ice lingers and the first buds of spring are appearing. Escape from Fox Island is a short one-act adventure intended for mid-level players. A group of rabbits are released on a strange island, guarded by foxes and a cantankerous badger, and cut off from the mainland by a narrow channel with unseen dangers. Can they find a way to escape? The Mound of the Basking Vultures is another One-Shot adventure set in the autumn and suitable for a Halloween-inspired evening. It features a horror theme complete with a mysterious hound, a gloomy vulture, strange moaning, and a ghost.

Lords of the Lowveld

S. R. Robinson

Currently, SRR is working on a new role-playing game on an animal theme that features mongooses facing the hazards of the wild in the African bush. Conceived as an independent game system, but with compatibilty to Bunnies & Burrows, Lords of the Lowveld allows players to role-play with characters that are both predators in their own right and prey to a host of much larger and more dangerous enemies. And snakes. There have to be snakes.
